Caring for Stainless Steel to Keep It Looking New

Stainless steel appliances bring a timeless, polished look to any kitchen. But let’s be honest: they can also be magnets for fingerprints, streaks, and smudges. The good news? With the right care, your stainless steel can keep its showroom shine for years to come.

What does “fingerprint resistant” really mean?

Some stainless steel appliances are finished with a special fingerprint-resistant coating. This makes smudges less noticeable and much easier to wipe away. However, these coatings need gentle care:

  • Use only warm water, mild soap, and a microfibre cloth.
  • Avoid stainless steel polish, window sprays, scouring cleansers, or any abrasive products as they can damage the protective finish.

Everyday dos and don’ts

  • Do use microfibre cloths. They’re soft, reusable, and streak-free.
  • Do follow the grain of the steel (you’ll notice fine lines running horizontally or vertically). Wiping against the grain can leave marks.
  • Don’t use paper towels or newspaper. They can leave lint behind and even scratch the surface.
  • Don’t use vinegar. It’s often recommended in DIY cleaning tips, but it can be harsh on stainless steel.

Two trusted ways to clean stainless steel

There are really two safe routes: soapy water or a stainless steel cleaner. Which you choose depends on your appliance finish and personal preference.

Step-by-step cleaning guide

  • Find the grain - Look closely at your appliance and see if the tiny lines run side-to-side or up-and-down. Always clean with the grain.
  • Wipe away grime - Dampen a microfibre cloth with warm water and wipe along the grain to remove smudges or stains.
  • Choose your cleaning method:
    • Soapy water method: Mix 32 oz of warm water with 1 teaspoon of dish soap. Dampen a cloth or soft sponge in the mixture, then wipe with the grain.
    • Stainless steel cleaner method: Spray the cleaner in an “S” pattern across the surface, then buff with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth, again following the grain.
  • Dry thoroughly - Use a clean, dry cloth to polish off any remaining streaks. This step makes all the difference.

Handling stubborn fingerprints

For persistent fingerprints, skip harsh chemicals. Instead, use the warm water and soap mixture with a soft cloth, and follow the same steps above. With a little patience, you’ll restore that beautiful, glimmering finish.

With the right routine, caring for stainless steel doesn’t have to be a chore. Stick to gentle products, respect the grain, and your appliances will stay looking sleek, shiny, and new.
