What is a stacking laundry set?
Stacking is when you place a front-load dryer on top of a front-load washer, creating a single vertical “laundry tower.” It’s a popular option for homes with limited floor space, such as condos, apartments, and small laundry rooms. At SecondShop we carry stackable bundles from trusted brands like Blomberg and Danby. These bundles are carefully matched so you don’t have to worry about compatibility.
Because washers are heavier (especially when full of water), they are always placed on the bottom. The dryer is mounted on top using a stacking kit; a metal frame or bracket system designed for your specific washer and dryer models to lock them securely together.
Most stacked laundry sets have controls positioned so you can easily reach both machines. When done correctly (with the right stacking kit, compatible models, and a level, sturdy floor) stacking is completely safe and creates a cleaner, more organized laundry space.
How do I check if my washer and dryer are compatible to stack?
Before buying, check the following:
- Read the Manuals or Spec Sheets Provided on the Brand Website
- Look in the “Installation” or “Stacking” section.
- Many brands will list exactly which models can be stacked together. To confirm, refer to the brand website.
Match the Brand (and Preferably the Series)
- Cross-brand stacking is rarely supported because stacking kits are model-specific.
- For best results, buy from the same brand and product line.
Identify the Correct Stacking Kit
- Each compatible pair uses a specific kit.
- Check the kit’s product page or manual for the exact washer/dryer models it fits.
- If the kit is discontinued, it’s often an indicator they aren’t meant to stack.
Check Dimensions
- Washer and dryer should have the same depth and width.
- Dryer can be slightly shallower but never wider.
Confirm Weight Limit
- The washer’s top panel is designed to support only a certain dryer weight.
- Manuals will list the maximum, make sure your dryer is under that limit.
Tip: On SecondShop.ca, open the listing of the bundle you’re interested in and scroll to the Features section, it will be clearly marked there whether the unit is stackable.
What parts do I need to stack a laundry tower?
Stacking Kit (Required)
- What it is: A set of brackets, clips, or rails designed for your specific washer/dryer model.
- Purpose: Secures the dryer so it won’t move or tip during operation.
- Includes: Brackets, screws/bolts, sometimes rubber pads for vibration.
- Important: Kits are brand and model specific.
Venting/Ductwork (For Vented Dryers)
- Standard dryer vent hose and clamps to connect to the outside vent.
- In tight spaces, a slim periscope vent can replace a bulky hose.
- Water Supply & Drain Hoses (For the Washer)
- Standard hot and cold water hoses plus a drain hose, same as any washer installation.
- Optional: Anti-Vibration Pads
- Rubber pads or mats to reduce noise and movement, especially on upper floors.
What happens if I need to replace one unit of a stacking tower?
If you already have a stacked set and one machine needs replacing, compatibility is key:
- Same Brand & Model Line: Your best bet is to replace with the exact model (or its updated version).
- Check Kit Compatibility: You may need a new stacking kit as a new dryer may not fit your existing stacking kit.
- Size Match: The new unit must match the footprint (width & depth) of the one it’s replacing.
If your replacement isn’t compatible, you may need to unstack and install the machines side-by-side or purchase a new matched set. SecondShop can help you determine the most cost-effective option.
